sell out?

If your one of your favorite band's music is used in a commercial for Liberty Mutual, should you consider them sell-outs? What if the commerical almost makes you cry? Does that mean that the sell-out factor is lessened?

Personally, I don't think there is any use getting worked up about a band "selling out." If you like the music, you like the music! And that is a good commercial.

I've often pondered this question myself. yesterday while watching my favorite TV show, Top Gear from the BBC (borrowed over the web) another quandary struck me when Sufjan Stevens' 'The Black Hawk War' opened a segment where a Peugeot was raced against two young Frenchmen practicing the aggressive sport of parkour [check the link, a very fascinating activity]: what does it mean when one of your favorite America-centric artists is featured on a British show with a European audience? I was excited and shocked at first, and I guess I'm in some way proud of Sufjan for some reason, but now I'm not quite sure what to think.

I have frequently thought of using this idea for a blog post and I hope you'll forgive me if I still do at some point in the future.
