her family wanted her to get a job. she wanted to travel, wander, lead a pastoral life. she took a horse and carriage to donovan's private island. she wrote songs along the way. she recorded the songs, released the songs, but didn't get much feedback; positive or negative. she saw joni mitchell on tv, singing and playing piano. she thought to herself how amazing and beautiful mitchell was, why should she even try. she put her guitar away, for while... i'll let her tell you the rest...

Spinning On Air is a really great radio show. Each week, the host, David Garland features one artist, or sometimes a group of artists whose songs revolve around a uniting theme. A couple of weeks ago, he did a show about singers and mountains! A musician himself, Garland is very receptive to both aesthetics and emotion. He's sincere and analytical, excitable and complimentary. When he had Sufjan on his show, he likened "Illinoise" to the newest "great american novel!"

String Cheese and Chili, my aural excursion concerning simple living, starring my roommates, Andy Mahler, and myself, aired on WFHB Bloomington Community Radio on The Daily Local News two Fridays ago. You can listen to the podcast here. My piece was played about half-way through the broadcast.

At 7:30 P.M., join me at the John Waldron Arts Center for an evening of close, intimate, deliberate, and blissful listening. I'm gonna be drawing from my young, yet growing collection of audio delicacies. Ranging from audio documentaries to sound collage to Yoni London doin' his thang.

A really great story was featured on Pitchfork today. It's all about Gary Sredzienski, a New England musician, polka-expert, and community-radio DJ.

Intersections

A couple years ago, Yoni and I were driving to Tennessee in the middle of the night while listening to Hem's album "Rabbit Songs." It was probably around 3:00 a.m., and as their lyric, "a man is walking on the highway" was uttered, Yoni and I both looked to our right to see a man, with a large backpack walking on the highway, directly to our right.

Yesterday afternoon, I was driving home from Bloomington by myself. After I finished my catfish sandwich and coffee at a Cracker Barrel near Fort Wayne, I gassed up my mobile, and was once again on my way. I began listening to Illinois: Sufjan Stevens Invites You To Come On Feel The Illinoise,and as I approached a sign for Decater, Indiana, Sufjan's heartbreaking song about stepmoms, "Decater" came on my Ipod!

Five minutes ago, I was typing an e-mail to my friend about taking chances while half-watching/listening to Dave Matthews Band on VH1's Storytellers. As I typed the last couple sentences of the e-mail, the band began to play "Ants Marching." As I was trying to articulate my sentiments about vulnerability, Dave sang, "TAKE THESE CHANCES!."

Did anyone notice that the microphone wasn't turned up enough to hear the award winners for Best Sound Mixing give their speech?
